Limestone County was created in 1818 from the former Elk County which had been formed in 1817. It then acquired some of the land that was part of Lauderdale County to the west. The name comes from one of the creeks which flow through it to the Tennessee River. Athens is the county seat. Other towns include Belle Mina, Elkmont, Capshaw and Mooresville.
